Overview

Problem

Hospitals can charge up to 4x more for medical imaging procedure depending on what insurance you have. Our team decided to find a way to help patients price shop for the same quality medical imaging.

User Interviews

I led the team in conducting 30 interviews with patients, providers, and payers. All three kinds stakeholders had different kinds of considerations in regards to the issue of price transparency.

Insights

1. Patients are motivated to shop for medical imaging options

2. New legislation is forcing hospitals to reveal how much they charge

3. Payers see big upside in selling to Medicare Advantage patients

How might we empower patients to find fair-price medical imaging that doesn’t compromise on quality?

Mind Map

Once our team settled on a way to empower patients to choose imaging that better fit their financial needs, I began brainstorming different features that a potential solution might need by creating a mind map.

First Prototype

Hospitals can charge up to 4x more for medical imaging procedure depending on what insurance you have. Our team decided to find a way to help patients price shop for the same quality medical imaging.

From talking with patients, we learned that other factors beyond price matter for MRIs. Patients wanted to see reviews from other patients as a signal of trust.

From talking with providers, we learned that providers would only use our app if it was easy. It was imperative that we minimize number of clicks.

User Testing

Solution

Prices you can trust

Load insurance and prescription

lets you integrate your insurance and keep track of all your prescriptions

Shop medical imaging

also lets you easily price shop for MRIs, CAT scans, and X-rays. It also lets you see reviews of different facilities by previous patients.

Book appointment

Lastly, also lets you book an imaging appointment in the app. This allows users to have a seamless experience, from discovery to fulfillment.

Under the hood

Semifinalists

What started as a class project grew into a real company, and our team went on to become semifinalists at Northwestern’s 2022 Startup Competition.

What I Learned

  • Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty with the first iteration.

  • More than I previously thought, healthcare gets dictated by by dollars and cents and what can get reimbursed.

  • Figma is the superior of the prototyping platforms.

  • If I had more time to work on Luci, I would spend more time learning how different insurance mechanisms work. I read several chapters in my biodesign textbook and still found myself not understanding the parlance.
